MARCH 1857.

28 Saturday. James about horses in morn - , thrash oats till dinner, help put the Sows, draw ½ load Siberian straw to Cow-loft, 1 load hay from best side in White barn & 1 load from under pieces in log Barn to Cow-loft, Rider draw in 2 loads cordwood (the last) by dinner, then help with straw & hay, John about cattle &e, repasir a pannel of hen-yard fence, bail out the Cellar, then saw wood__ Self wrote Constance, & make up my book___

29 Sunday. Kate, Anna & the children went out for a drive in the afternoon, Rob t & Mary-Jane came in just after they left, Rob t came & talked with Self___

30 Monday. James had Charley & cutter to go out back with his wife &e, John about cattle &e, steam a box of bad snows, sorted out the other day, throw away all the bad cups they put in the back stable, bail out Cellar, to Rob ts with Anna & on to Berry's for some yeast, then file horse nails to ring pigs, saw some hardwood, do up the things____ Rider chop softwood for Constance after grinding his ax____

31 Tuesday. James about horses in morn - , finish about cattle &e, help weigh hay & at sundries till dinner, then fix troughs to let water onto the pit-man, help ring pigs, bring down a little load oat-straw to Cows, saw hardoowd, John ill till noon, helped weigh the hay & went home again, then at sundries, ring pigs, help down with the straw, do up the cattle &e____ Rider fodder cattle in morn - , then chop soft-wood for Constance____ Self set all 4 wood-saws yesterday, today rig blocks to weigh hay____

 

APRIL 1857.

1 Wednesday. James about horses in morn - , help finish about house after breakfast, clean up oats & put them away by dinner, then burn the lampas in Spring, grey mare & the two young ones, split some long junks of pine, help grind the new ax & the one Payne broke, John about cattle &e, help with the oats, help with the horses, grind the new ax & the one Payne broke the piece out of, do up cattle &e____ Rider
Self reading newspapers & writing to Constance____

2 Thursday. James about horses, help finish about house after breakfast, draw 2 loads Siberian straw (the last) to shed for bedding, then split long junks of pine & saw hardwood, John about cattle &e, help down with the straw, bail out the Cellar, put a handle in new ax, do up the things___ George sawing wood next door, help stow away the straw & bail cellar___ Rider chop softwood___ Self writing to Con.____

3 Friday. James about horses, help in Sawmill about 2 hours, then thrash oats, John about cattle &e, take handle out of sawlog ax & put in a shorter one, saw wood, help get the new planks up in Mill flume___ Jay repairing sawmill flume____ Rider choping softwood, George pile & Self writing Ham & Con - ____

4 Saturday. James about horses, help Jay for a little while in Sawmill, then thrash oats & bring down a load oat-straw to Cows, John about cattle &e with Jay till about 11 o'C, thrash oats till dinner, then saw wood, help down with the straw, do up the things____ Jay repairing sawmill flume, put handles on ice house doors, put in 3 panes of glass____ Rider chop softwood___ George split &

5 Sunday. Charley came up yesterday evening in Berry 's waggon, James took him to Aylmer in cutter this even g ___

6 Monday. James about horses morn - & even g , set water troughs under sawmill, thrash oats, John about cattle &e morn - & even g , thrash oats & saw some wood___ Rider gone to look about land, George saw wood___ Self came down stairs yesterday after breakfast, got fresh cold & went to bed very poorly; came down to breakfast this morn - , but was very unwell with cold on chest till even g _

7 Tuesday. James about horses in morn - , finish about cattle &e after breakfast, wash out beer keg; take M rs Greene & Anna home in double sleigh, on to Berry's for beer, called at the post on his way back at noon, then saw wood, salt horses & cattle & do up all__ John & George at wood for themselves, Rider to Ottawa___ Self much better again to day____
